The unit will focus on transforming part of the Port of Thessaloniki (piers 2,3 and 4), a so-called 'non place' into an active urban landscape both flexible in time and scale. Starting from evaluating its surrounding dynamics, social context and culture we will develop an urban planning strategy operating as place making. Following the basic features of “place making” and urban sustainability we will use a bottom-up approach in order to produce an extensive urban study. We aim to propose a dynamic landscape, both flexible in time and scale, composed by multiple emerging clusters of interventions that allows different scenarios to be developed. W9 theme : ROSS: Readapting open spaces to serve Cities with a rundown, fragmented urban fabric with minor budget dedicated on landscape maintenance are destined to suffocate in the years to come. With public and private funds allocated away from “neighborhood” landscaping, open spaces without a “wow” factor can only survive with the exploitation of affordable and intuitive designs. This workshop will introduce old and new strategies (scarcely applied in Greek urban design proposals) for transformation of abandoned or single-use spaces into multifunctional informal spaces for potential users of diverse background. We welcome designers, artists, engineers, social scientists, craftsmen etc., in an experiment that explores the unlimited possibilities and challenges of designing by incorporating cross-disciplined logics and skills, unbiasedly. Theories of Jane Jacobs, Kevin Lynch, Ian McHarg, Constantinos Doxiadis are infused with those of contemporary urban fabric visionaries like Jahn Gehl, Cathee Dee, Ai Wei Wei and Piet Oudolf to produce sustainable and cost-effective design outputs. The team will analyze and design proposals open spaces that people of Thessaloniki encounter almost every day but happen to overlook possibilities of adaptation to serve the needs of many. The first project will involve the transformation of a rundown footbridge next to the Macedonia Palace Hotel, just behind the city’s waterfront. The second will introduce new functions of a small alley just on the verge between the old Town and the city Centre (Klisthenous Street). W11 theme : Public Making. Lively Cities : a contemporary concept of city planning, is linked with pedestrian activities in city space. One of the most significant activities are the staying activities, notably sitting. The number of people staying and length of their stay are sings of how good the city space has been designed respectively how welcoming it is. On the other hand, on any artificial settlements such as temporary housing or refugee camps, most of its issues are results of inappropriate planning. Hence the target of this workshop is to improve the quality of common space in Refugee Camps. Before designing, it is essential to identify the users’ behavior and needs, to measure and survey, letting the research and its results determine the solution, therefore this workshop will be research-based along with design which will consist of researching about the methodology of survey, terminology/local mechanism, criteria and data to be collected, locations and timing, field survey and measurements, including interviews and questioners and finally design, proposal and possible interventions on site. It is expected that this workshop’s outcome will contribute in several fields. The participants will have the opportunity to be further informed about different research methodologies and problem approaches. It is also expected that this workshop will manage to offer further solutions/proposals to authorities for further interventions in such camps, preventing this way certain number of issues in terms of behavior.
W11 is a GREENHOUSE Workshop: We intend to continue this workshop after ECOWEEK 2016 in Thessaloniki in order to develop the workshop proposal further. The workshop may open to more participants. Stay tuned! More about the ECOWEEK GREENHOUSE here
