"Imi place grozav delta,
Si asteptand inspiratia
Care sa transforme placerea
In emotie artistica,
Stau intins pe iarba,
Sub batranul stejar noduros
Din padurea Caraorman.
Ma uit la ceas:
Cinci dupa-amiaza.
Five o'clock, ora cand englezilor
In scoarta stejarului.
Fie ca emotia mea
Sa actioneze ca o rasina,
Oblojind si vindecand coaja bolnava!
Ah, stejarule, noduros,
Care fixezi cu fundamentale, adanci, radacini
Nisipurile si oamenii
De acest indepartat colt de lume ...
Cum te-as mai lua in brate
Si te-as saruta pe rana."
TOPIC
The VăcăreÈ™ti Nature Park is a wetland, formed on the site of a hydrotechnical project commenced by the Communist regime in 1986 and left unfinished. After the 1989’s Revolution, nature flourished free and regained the site. The area is located in Bucharest, 4 km away from the city center. It spreads over a surface of 183 hectares.
The observations and studies that have been developed for biodiversity assessment purposes since 2007 highlighted the area’s natural value. The Romanian Academy, the most significant scientific institution of Romania, favourably endorsed the Substantiation Note filed in 2013 in view of having a protection regime implemented.
From a natural point of view, the area is accessible especially to birds – over 90 bird species come to VăcăreÈ™ti, mostly water species – herons, egrets, cormorants, mallards and wild geese (ferruginous ducks). Apart from the birds, we should also mention small mammals such as muskrats, foxes and weasels. We should add interesting species of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. 5 otters – a species that is protected at European level – have been spotted. The presence of the otter is the best indicator of the VăcăreÈ™ti ecosystem’s quality.
Apart from natural species and habitats, the area also offers a magnificent landscape and a very interesting contrast between the urban, anthropized area and the natural wetland with expanses of reed, swamps and wetland-specific trees and vegetation.
In a visit to VăcăreÈ™ti in the summer of 2012, Tobias Salathe, RAMSAR Senior Adviser for Europe, declared: “VăcăreÈ™ti will undoubtedly be one of the most innovative urban wetland projects in the world”.
In the date of May 11, 2016, the Government passed the Decision for the establishment of the Văcărești Nature Park. The establishment of a 183 ha park during an era of green space destruction is undoubtedly a heroic moment for the city of Bucharest.
TEAM
OUTCOME
The students will design a preliminary project, proposing solutions for the visiting routes and pavilions.

In the present there are discussions about park’s design to make it accessible for the public.
We invited Bernadette Mercx from Sanfte Strukturen to lead this workshop. Sanfte Strukturen builds palaces, cathedrals and doms of willows. Marcel Kalberer, the coordinator of the group, says he does this because he belives in developing sustainable building processes and encourages social coexistence of humans with nature.
In this workshop the students will design the visiting routes and pavilions working with natural elements from the site.
Through this workshop we want to realize a project of living architecture that, together with the NGO that protect the park, to build it afterwards.
The idea of building an object of living architecture is in tune with the concept that has created the "Văcăreşti Nature Park" in the city of Bucharest: the spontaneous natural growth.
