"Does ketchup grow on trees?"
"Do strawberries grow on super- market shelves?"

Urbanization and industrialization have disconnected us from lands of bounty. This has affected the long and short term health of citizens with increased levels of obesity and diabetes reaching crisis levels.
PRODUCTIVE GARDENS
TOPIC
Food safety is a global issue, not only is it affecting the Global South, but also the Global North. Urban agriculture and urban gardens may hold the key to unlocking valuable information to deal with this issue. Urban planners, landscape architects, architects, politicians and urban communities have a valuable role in creating gardening practices which can contribute to the alleviation of the food safety issue.

How do we transform and interconnect people, infrastructure, relationships, policies and sustainability into a new kind of urban ecology that favors urban gardening? How do we deal with the long term impact of this new urban food model? What will these types of interventions yield; greenhouses perched on the top of every skyscraper, vertical farming mammoths, privatized land banks, or democratized plots of land running through our cities?
Let’s explore a garden case in Bucharest! And let permaculture be our investigation guide!

PRODUCTIVE GARDENS is organized in partenership with
THE FACULTY OF URBANISM FROM
"ION MINCU" UNIVERSITY OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM

Afterwards the students will join a design team and work together with ECOWEEK partners in order to create more productive gardens for the communities.

FORWARDS
OUTCOME
The students will make a complete design and practice proposal, including both the masterplan and the organization of planting. The workshop outcome will be a "Report-Guide for starting-up Urban Gardens" based on permaculture design methodology and the case study in Titan Cuarter. This is a transparent and coherent document easy to understand by both regular citizens, "green" initiative leaders and the municipality.
We would like to have On-site activation: hands-on preparation and clean-up & a social event for connecting to the interested community.
If the weather will allow, the participants will prepare the garden space, lay out the beds, feed the soil and plant.

The productive garden is a place to work and recreation, a place to spend your free time working, playing and learning combined with a respect for nature.
The scope is to realize a edible neighborhood agricultural production garden in the benefit of the community. In this regard we chose, with the aid of the Municipality of the 3rd District of Bucharest, a site for the study and subsequent implementation thereof in the Titan Neighborhood.

With this purpose in mind the participants will:
- Get familiar with the role and value of urban gardens.
- Will be introduced to principals and design methodology of permaculture.
- Will research the selected case in the Titan neighbourhood and offer guidelines for design.
