“Spending time interacting with nature in a well-designed garden won’t cure your cancer or heal a badly burned leg. But there is good evidence it can reduce your levels of pain and stress - and, by doing that, boost your immune system in ways that allow your own body and other treatments to help you heal.”

 GARDENS THAT HEAL

TOPIC

“A designer must consider both the larger societal changes and the creation of better, more supportive environments from people’s daily lives. We believe that thoughtful design takes into account existing knowledge and provides a chance for people to express themselves, be effective, and feel empowered.” (Clare Cooper Marcus)

So, we will explore the way people relate emotionally to their physical surroundings, the degree to which physical environment affects behavior, and how the built environment can facilitate the healing of the patients.

Aesthetic goals need to be balanced and merged with ecological needs, contextual issues, and user preferences. Rather than asking people to choose between a set of designs, we will do context-sensitive design as a way to understand the specific psychological needs of a people.

PURPOSE

The courtyard of the “Victor Babes” Hospital in Bucharest will be the site for a landscape project creating spaces for the recovery of the patients.

Our objective is to further materialize this project, following implementation: functional farming of the outdoor spaces, promenade setting up for patients rehabilitation, relaxation spaces and landscape planning for the hospital courtyard.

We want this project to become a model for hospitals in Romania.

The students will make a preliminary project, proposing landscaping solutions for the courtyards and drawing attention to the potential of the green space to aid the patients healing.

The project will provide a basis for the subsequent execution of the landscape design.

OUTCOME

FORWARDS

Afterwards the students will join a design team and work together making the technical project for execution works following in short-term the implementation of their ideas.

Soon, the hospital courtyards will have a new and beautiful landscape and you can be one of the creators!
