On the edge_ projects for fringe groups

It´s not easy to be homeless.
It´s not easy to get a roof over your head at a reasonable cost.
It´s not easy to build with scarce resources in a responsible way.
Built prototypes from gaupenraub+/- for people on the edge of our society in cooperation with private associations, students, volunteers, sponsors, and the future inhabitants.

The lecture was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Tel Aviv and the cooperation of EUNIC – Tel Aviv.

The architecture office gaupenraub +/- was founded in 1999 by Alexander Hagner and Ulrike Schartner in Vienna. Their first projects included numerous minor conversions and extensions. In 2006 their work received a larger public response for the first time with the selection of gaupenraub in the first season of Young Viennese Architects (YoVA1).
While the office has been in operation for over 20 years, gaupenraub +/- by now works in different areas and scales, its broad field of work ranges from construction in existing contexts to urban planning to furniture and product design.
Their most important projects include the egg museum for the sculptor Wander Bertoni in Winden am See, the renovation and expansion of the company building of the MCM Klosterfrau Healthcare Group, as well as numerous works on building within existing structures such as the conversion of the former Würzlmühle in the Waldviertel.
Gaupenraub +/- became known through its involvement in projects for disadvantaged people such as the VinziDorf Wien, a residential project for men with severe alcoholism, the realization of the Memobil, a furniture for dementia patients, the VinziRast-mittendrin, a multi-award-winning building for the cohabitation of formerly homeless people and students and currently VinziRast am Land, where formerly homeless people should get their feet back on the ground, thanks to a broad employment field in agriculture.
