Elias MessinasSketching Session
Architect, urban planner, environmental consultant, social entrepreneur and social participation expert | GR, IL

Lets take a minute to stop and observe. To look closer. Lets try to trace the beautiful lines of a contour, a balcony, an opening, a crack on the wall, an architectural detail, the meeting of materials, textures and colors, and the very edge where the roof meets the sky.

Lets try to unfold and interpret the rich patchwork of layers of history, architecture and time, and to record the beautiful play of light and shade on facades and architectural details.

What a great way to discover Aegina!

Come in walking shoes, bring hat and water (in reusable bottle!), bring sketchbook or pad, and different mediums to sketch (pens, pencils, colors, charcoal) to experiment. Bring camera to document the experience. You can bring a folding seat if you wish, but we may sit on steps or seats or benches wherever possible.

At the end of the session, selected sketches with excerpts of your written experience will be e-‘bound’ to an online sketchbook to be posted on ISSUU and eliasblue.com (click to review previous e-sketchbooks).

Coming out of the pandemic crisis, the concept of sustainability is ranked as one of the most important trends, both in the selection criteria of the global visitor and the entrepreneurs of a destination. In this context, the Destination must adjust its strategy and aim for a more sustainable future. One of the first steps to achieve the above is the DESTINATION ASSESSMENT. The evaluation process allows a destination to be directly involved in the application of the criteria for the destination, to understand its sustainability against global top standards and to identify areas for improvement based on them. In addition, the correct
evaluation is based on impartiality and objectivity. It intends to be used as a tool for the management authorities of the destination to identify the strengths and weaknesses, as their effects concern the management of the Sustainability of the Destination and its value chain (supply chain). It is NOT a quality mark or certification, it is a real "assessment" of the situation at a time.

The Sustainable Destination Assessment laboratory is a pre-assessment of a DESTINATION EVALUATION, with the aim of demonstrating the capabilities of this tool at the level of a destination like Aegina, and the participatory training of students in assessment processes with real data and representations, both with the local community and with the stock of a destination like Aegina. The design of the workshop will use the methodology of the World Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC / www.gstcouncil.org), while the evaluation will be based on the GSTC Methodology for Sustainable Destinations, GSTC-D.
The main objective of the methodology that will be applied is the introduction of the basic principles of sustainability for the destination by Dr. I. Pappas, and the definition of data retrieval objectives for the evaluation of the criteria of the standard and therefore of the Destination with real data that will emerge from bibliographic search, field research and interviews with the local community. In other words, it is a simulation of a real assessment for the level of sustainability of a destination!
For the needs of the implementation of the above, there will be the active participation of 20 students, of which 5 will act locally at the destination and the rest via the internet, supporting the on-site research and processing of the material. At the same time, there will be a continuous interaction of the evaluation team with the local community (hoteliers, restaurants, city councilors, by associations / NGOs), through a series of meetings (one for each module of the model - Destination Management | Economy & Society | Culture |Environment) and updating the objectives of each action and evaluating the results / findings of the previous action, at different points each time of the destination. In this way, everyone will interact and participate in the result, as well as contribute as a multiplier of the people of the destination for an important and useful result for its future.
The Laboratory concludes with an evaluation meeting of all the findings, through the participation of the groups for each unit, the creation of a set of conclusions which are presented to the local community, with which a discussion is held on them and a first set of proposals and actions is planned for the next destination day towards a more sustainable and creative future.

Dimitris Georgiou / Elias Messinas

THE PARTHENON MARBLES IN SEARCH OF A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION:

Invitation for International Public Dialogue and Proposals

for the Parthenon Marbles

At ECOWEEK 2021 we will present the initiative and discuss the proposals in Aegina on Friday 3 September at 20:00 at the Courtyard of the Folklore Museum (Λαογραφικό Μουσείο Αίγινας) on Sp. Rodi 16, Aegina. Admission is free.

The non-profit organization ECOWEEK and the non-profit cultural organization  PAREMVASI propose a special initiative in the context of the celebrations of the 200th  anniversary of Greece, under the auspices of "Greece 2021":

Invitation for an international public dialogue on the Parthenon Marbles, with  the aim of presenting ideas and proposals in search of a creative, sustainable  and acceptable solution for the Parthenon Marbles: their return to Athens, their  motherland or their stay at the British Museum? Or another creative scenario  that will be mutually accepted?

The international community is invited to submit ideas and proposals in a digital  questionnaire and thus contribute to the dialogue to find a mutually acceptable and  sustainable solution.

ECOWEEK Theme: ‘Smart Cities – Innovation – Zero Pollution’

ECOWEEK Partner virtual online event: 5 June 2021

ECOWEEK is proud to participate again this year to the European Green Week 2021 titled “Zero pollution for healthier people and planet”.

With a hybrid program of online and in-situ activities, ECOWEEK joins Aegina, Greece, the first capital of modern Greece, in the celebrations of the 200-year anniversary of the establishment of the modern Greek State. The message that ECOWEEK brings to the celebrations is a message of respect to history, a call for sustainable tourism and support of the local economy, a message of public participation and engagement, and proposals for innovation in sustainable design and practices, in particular, for zero pollution.

ECOWEEK Partner Event EU Green Week 2021*online event

Pollution affects everybody – through the air we breathe, the water we drink or the land we grow our food on. It is the largest environmental cause of multiple mental and physical diseases, and of premature deaths, especially among children, people with certain medical conditions and the elderly. But pollution does not affect everybody equally. People who live in more deprived areas very often live close to contaminated sites or in areas where there is a very high flow of traffic. Pollution is also one of the main reasons for the loss of biodiversity. It reduces the ability of ecosystems to provide services such as carbon sequestration and decontamination.

But it can be prevented. The EU Action Plan toward a Zero Pollution Ambition is a key action of the European Green Deal. It aims to help create a toxic-free environment across the EU by better monitoring and, reporting, and by preventing and remedying pollution from air, water, soil, and consumer products. It also supports the post-COVID 19 recovery by helping to rebuild a more sustainable EU economy, creating job opportunities and reducing social inequalities.

The European Green Week 2021 is dedicated to the ‘zero pollution ambition’, as well as initiatives in the fields of energy, mobility, fisheries, health and biodiversity. ECOWEEK joins EU Green Week 2021 as an opportunity to engage with all stakeholders and interested citizens on how to work together to making a zero pollution and toxic-free environment a reality.

Event successfully completed. View recording at the ECOWEEK Youtube channel.
