In 2016 ECOWEEK expanded its outreach to new countries, thanks to the initiative of young professionals who thanks to their enthusiasm, skills and leadership, activated local partners and organized successful events in their cities. They were successful thanks to collaborations with professionals and students, and the support of institutions, universities, municipalities and local businesses. The same year ECOWEEK also launched a collaboration with the 92Y in the ‘7 Days of Genius’ project, organizing events that promote innovation and entrepreneurship for society and the environment. The following events took place:
On March 3-10 ECOWEEK held GENIUS events in Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece, Jerusalem, Israel and in Bucharest, Romania, organized locally by teams of young professionals and entrepreneurs.
On May 27-June 5 ECOWEEK was invited to join the Eco-Week festival in Cairns, Australia, an environmental festival open to the public.
On July 3-10 ECOWEEK organized a large scale festival and hands-on interventions in Ag. Nikolaos, in Crete, Greece, invited and hosted by Blue Gr Hotels and Resorts, the G&A Mamidakis Foundation, LoveGreece.com and the Municipality of Ag. Nikolaos. The event was widely publicized by the local and international media, including the european Green Week. The event included keynote speaker Canadian architect Chris Doray, and placemaking workshops among others by Orizzontale (Italy), Marko & Placemakers (UK) and the team of Galia Hanoch (Israel) and Dr. Elias Messinas which transformed the courtyards of a public elementary school.
On September 10-25, initiated and organized by former ECOWEEK Associate Argjira Krasniqi and hosted at Germia Park, ECOWEEK held a summer camp event with hands-on installations and placemaking in the park. With speakers and workshop leaders from Germany, Greece, Lebanon, Bosnia, the Netherlands, USA, Liechtenstein, and Canada, the groups created among others a full scale tree house in the park.
On October 23-29, initiated and organized by architects Radu Negulescu and Laura Negulescu, UNIVERCITY, and the Faculty of Urbanism of ‘Ion Mincu’ University of Architecture and Urbanism, ECOWEEK focused on planning gardens that heal at the courtyard of Victor Babes Hospital in Bucharest, and hosted speakers from Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Romania.
On November 14-20, initiated and organized by ECOWEEK Associate Despoina Kouinoglou and a team of volunteers, ECOWEEK took place in Thessaloniki, Greece, with speakers from Germany, Italy, UK and Greece.

The ECOWEEK events in Greece, Israel, Kosovo, and Romania, and participation in the ECO-Week in Australia, which were open and free admission to the general public, were made possible thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of numerous volunteers, professionals and businesses, who enthusiastically led activities, supported and assisted in making the events possible and successful. ECOWEEK events in Greece, Israel, Kosovo, Romania, and Australia, made a significant impact in raising environmental awareness in each location.
