Elias

Elias Messinas ( GR & IL )
Founder Chairman & Coordinator

Elias is an architect and environmental consultant, senior lecturer, and social entrepreneur.  Graduate of Yale School of Architecture, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, he holds a doctorate from the National Technical University of Athens.

Elias attended the M.Sc. program on Environment and Development at NTUA, and has completed research on sustainable design in the Negev desert at Ben Gurion University.

​

Elias teaches sustainable design at Patras University and Holon Institute of Technology, and has published his work through books, articles, catalogues, and exhibitions, and is the author and co-editor of ECOWEEK The Book#1: 50 Voices for Sustainability. (www.ecoama.com)

Despoina

Despoina Kouinoglou ( UK )

Despoina is a landscape architect with work experience in the UK where she has undertaken projects in various scales, including rural and urban schemes, with main focus on landscape planning and design. Despoina has also gained experience from a rural architecture program in capacity building and development in Mt. Elgon in Kenya, as part of the doctorate dissertation research of Michiel Smits (TU Delft, Avans University of Applied Sciences). Despoina has completed her masters degree in landscape architecture at the Postgraduate Program of Studies in Landscape Architecture at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2017). Despoina’s dissertation  researched the redesign and integration of refugee camps with local communities through design.

 

Since 2015, Despoina has been an Associate at ECOWEEK.

Vicky Panagiotidou ( UK )

Vicky started exploring the world in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1994.

As soon as she was able to walk she never stopped roaming the streets of the city and soon departed to explore more cities.

Several stops along the way include her studies at the Architecture School of  Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and currently at UCL’s  Bio-integrated design Master.

Vicky is dedicated to learning continuously and to volunteering for worthy causes, thus joining several activities and workshops, including ECOWEEK in Thessaloniki. 

Vicky is interested in innovative and peculiar design and materials, fresh ideas about unexplored topics, and most of all she adores meeting new people and sharing ideas because that’s what triggers her next step!

Sofia

Sofia Passia ( FR )

Sofia was born and raised in Thessaloniki, Greece. She adores every corner of her city, from people to buildings, the reason why her Master Thesis concerns the Passages of Thessaloniki, presented at the South European Cities Conference. Sofia used to live with her family and three sisters in Bruxelles for 5 years, where she experienced the French speaking environment from an early age. Prior to her graduation from the Architecture program of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2017), Sofia spent an Erasmus semester in Lyon, France, where she also completed several internships. Currently living in Paris, she has been working in architectural firms which focus on the development of medium scale projects. Sofia has been participating in volunteering actions and workshops and believes highly in interacting with other peers “together we stand, divided we fall”.

She has been a member of the ECOWEEK Administration Team since 2020 and enjoys every second of the journey.

Pavlos Symianakis ( UK )

Pavlos is an Architect Engineer graduate of AUTH, Greece (2019). He is currently studying at the Architectural Association in London. The theme of his postgraduate is Architecture and Urbanism: Social Ecologies at the Design Research Laboratory (AADRL). Prior to his postgraduate studies, Pavlos was part of the Not a Number Architects firm in Thessaloniki, where he assumed an important role in the development of major architectural projects of different scales throughout Europe. Projects included the Rue de pain bistro in Bucharest, Romania, the Open Market master planning and design of retail pavilions in Elounda, Greece, the design of a Boutique Hotel in Santorini, Greece, the Master plan for a fifteen hectare theme park near Sparta, Greece, and others. During his architectural studies, Pavlos has taken part in several workshops and seminars including ECOWEEK. Pavlos is interested in digital experimental design research and contemporary fabrication techniques, integrated with a vision of a greener and smarter future, where people and materials matter.

Eleni Mantika ( GR )

Eleni was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, and is an undergraduatestudent of Architecture at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Her extracurricular activity includes radio production and working as a DJ inThessaloniki. Eleni adores travelling and never misses a chance to explore new places, meet new people, and experience new foods and cultures. Eleni has joined numerous workshops and volunteer actions such as Open House, Enhancements, High School Engineering, European Youth Capital 2014 and others. In 2015, as part of an educational workshop in New York, she was introduced to leading universities and renowned architectural firms, including COOKFOX and Thornton Tomasetti. Eleni truly believes that sustainable design and eco-friendly materials are the future of architecture for a more sustainable world!

Nafsica Mouti ( GR )

Nafsica was born and raised in Athens. 
She is a Physicist, who graduated from the University of Ioannina in 2019. She is currently doing her MSc in Microsystems & Nanostructures at National Technical University of Athens. She works as Research Associate in the National Center of Scientific Research “Demokritos”. Nafsica has external experience in labs and team working. She has a huge enthusiasm in learning new things and exploring unknown (for her) fields whilst finding new perspectives for an eco-friendly and sustainable future. She first participated ECOWEEK as a workshop leader in May 2020, and became a part of the team the following summer.

Theodora Passia ( GR )

Theodora is the little explorer of Thessaloniki.

She has participated multiple times as a volunteer in events of the city and enjoys her strong cultural aspect. For the past three years, her main occupation is to attend and organise events and festivals as a freelance communication manager, collaborating with well-known companies of the city, such as yoga studios and radio stations.

She is a radio producer at Radio Nowhere, an internet radio station broadcasting her radio show since 2017. Ever since, she also works as a communication manager for the radio station and plays as a DJ in the city bars. She enjoys very much interacting with one another and has interviewed several artists such as Kognitif and Kadebostany during her radio shows. Having a strong team spirit and a creative mindset, she believes that the key elements to a successful collaboration is honesty and communication.

Ina is an undergraduate Architecture student at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

She discovered her love for architecture from a very young age and has pursued it ever since. She is passionate about sustainability and anything eco-friendly and that’s why she believes that the future of architecture is “green”.

Ina enjoys volunteering for a lot of different causes, taking part in various workshops and meeting new people who share the same interests.

In her free time, she loves travelling, taking pictures and playing tennis.

Alongside with her studies, she has worked as a graphic designer and as a social media manager. Now, she tries to spend time doing all the things that she loves.

Jenny is an architecture graduate from Democritus University of Thrace in Xanthi.

Her interests and hobbies are film, arts and music.

She joined ECOWEEK for the first time in 2016, for a workshop and since then she’s interested in their action.

In 2020, Jenny joined the organizing team.

The reason why is that she’s interested in educating herself about sustainability and ways to spread the message of ecology in her work!

Mary Effie is an undergraduate Architecture student in the National Technical University of Athens. She was born and raised in Athens, the city she never gets bored of, and she enjoys travelling, learning and living new experiences. She is interested in green architecture and she believes that sustainability is key-aspect for design.

She enjoys participating in architecture and design events and has recently volunteered for Open House Athens 2019, MEDS Workshop 2019 and ECOWEEK online events 2020. She has also participated in an architecture competition for the design of the first PassivHaus Kindergarten in Greece with fellow students, in which the group reached the Final Six. DIYs, sketching, music, meeting with friends and coffee are her key-elements to genuine happiness!

Maria-Eirini is an undergraduate architecture student at the National Technical University of Athens.

She was born and raised in Athens, Greece. Maria-Eirini is interested in sustainability, eco-friendly design and landscape architecture.

She believes in volunteering and interacting with other people as a way of evolving.

She has volunteered in organizations such as Open House and MEDS (Meeting of Design Students). She first participated in ECOWEEK in 2020, in the two online workshops.

In her free time, Maria-Eirini enjoys learning foreign languages, traveling as much as she can, and capturing emotions through photographs.

Panagiota Mousa ( GR )

Panagiota’s hometown is Orchomenos, in Boeotia, Greece. She moved to Athens in 2017, in order to study Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens and she is now in the fourth year of her studies. Panagiota decided that she wanted to become an architect at a really young age, with no second thoughts, hoping that one day she will manage to ‘build her own world’. Panagiota speaks English and French and has already participated in international projects, including camps and educational programs, such as Odyssey International Summer Camp and Euroscola Program of the European Parliament. She has also taken part in several workshops and volunteering actions, including ECOWEEK, Open House Athens and MEDS. This year, she participated alongside 5 students in her first undergraduate architectural competition for the design and construction of the first Passive Kindergarten in Greece, organized by the Hellenic Passive House Institute. Panagiota is interested in any type of intervention that will turn the world into a more ‘green’ and viable place, creating spaces that are quite enjoyable in living and quite worth visiting!

Thanasis is an undergraduate student of architecture studying at the National Technical University of Athens.

He was born and raised in Patras but his curiosity about the world brought him to Athens where he currently lives.

He has taken part in ECOWEEK online workshop in 2020, before that he had volunteered in events such as MEDs Spetses 2019 and Openhouse Athens.

He is passionate about nature and likes learning about different cultures.

In his spare time he enjoys playing tennis or doing outside group activities as he believes in social interactions as a means of personal and collective growth.

Spiros Spanos ( GR )

Spiros is from Thessaloniki, Greece. Born and raised in a city with a significant architectural history, he was fascinated by it from the early years. In 2009, he began his studies in Interior Architecture in the AAS College, an associate of the UCLAN (University of Central Lancashire). He graduated in 2012 and the following year he moved to Denmark. There, he showed a great interest of the Nordic understanding of light which inspired him to follow a Master’s degree in Lighting Design from the AAU in Copenhagen. While living in Denmark, he worked alongside light artist Jakob Kvist and later on at Vertigo.dk. In both companies he had a hands-on experience of lighting installations from the conception phase till the, very demanding, execution and implementation. In 2018, he moved back to Thessaloniki, where he worked as a lighting designer for Artemide Hellas. He now works as a freelancer lighting consultant.
