2020________the online meet-up

On 2020, responding to the COVID-19 restrictions and confinement of many young professionals students around the world, ECOWEEK organized its first online event on Circular Economy in Design. More than 350 young and established professionals and students registered from 20 countries around the world.

Experts in the field of Circular Economy shared their expertise and work around the globe, and engaged participants in a virtual design challenge. Although in an online format, young professionals were extremely pleased with the online workshops experience and had the opportunity to meet and work with peers from around the world.

Why Circular Economy?

In the current global circumstances and looking ahead to the opportunities after the COVID-19 crisis, we must be looking to balance between sustainable economy and environmental and social sustainability. The building industry is responsible for the use of up to 40% of produced energy, up to 40% of the materials produced globally and about 35% of the world’s waste. Current and future advancements show that the request for natural resources will rise three times in 2050. The main reasons are the global economic growth and the increase of the world population which has already reached 7.5 billion. In order to create a sustainable, clean and safe living environment for future generations, a change has to be made in the way we design and build our buildings and our cities.
