In 2012 ECOWEEK expanded its outreach to new countries, thanks to the initiative of young professionals who thanks to their enthusiasm, skills and leadership, activated local partners and organized successful events in their cities. They were successful thanks to collaborations with professionals and students, and the support of institutions, universities, municipalities and local businesses. Five significant events took place.
On February 26-March 2 in Jerusalem, Holon and Rishon LeZion in Israel with keynote speakers Ulf Meyer (Invenhoven Architects, Germany), Elena Barthel (Rural Studio, USA), and Daniel Pearl (L’OEUF, Canada). The event also included a very unique - first of its kind! - panel discussion between the Mayor of Jerusalem Nir Barkat and the Mayor of Athens Yiorgos Kaminis.
On March 1-8 in Thessaloniki, Greece, with keynote speaker renown German environmental architect Gernot Minke.
On May 16-18, initiated and organized by former ECOWEEK associate Magdalena Malska in Krakow, Poland, with keynote speakers Nicola Delon (Encore Heureux, France) and Marta Pozo (MVRDV, Netherlands).
On September 24-30 in Rome, Italy, with keynote speakers with keynote speaker award-winning Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.
And, on November 26-30 initiated and organized by Jelena Lucic in Belgrade, Serbia, with keynote speaker award-winning French architect the late Francoise-Helene Jourda.
All events included one-week sustainable design workshops, led by local and international architects, designers and landscape architects.
The ECOWEEK events in Greece, Israel, Italy, Poland and Serbia, which were open and free admission to the general public, were made possible thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of numerous volunteers, professionals and businesses, who enthusiastically led activities, supported and assisted in making the events possible and successful. ECOWEEK events in Greece, Israel, Italy, Poland and Serbia, made a significant impact in raising environmental awareness in each location.
