2007___________greece

After two years and two intense environmental weeks in Aegina, Greece, ECOWEEK established its activity throughout Greece. ECOWEEK founder architect, urban planner and social entrepreneur Dr. Elias Messinas inspired by the newly released documentary An Inconvenient Truth with former US Vice President Al Gore, he undertook an extensive campaign, among other activities, to present the documentary to the general public, in public and private schools, the army and in trade fairs, in more than 30 locations throughout Greece. ECOWEEK opened with a keynote lecture by Antarctica explorer Robert Swan in cooperation with the British Council, and included lectures, participation in trade fairs, and open house site visits to bioclimatic buildings, including to renown architect Alexandros Tombazis bio-climatic office. The same year, Elias sent an invitation to Al Gore to come to Greece to give his slideshow on Global Warming in Greece. Although he had never visited Greece before, quite surprisingly, Al Gore accepted the invitation, and he was greeted by an audience of nearly 3,000 in the Athens Concert Hall in June 13, 2007. The activity of 2007 was concluded with a screening of An Inconvenient Truth and a lecture by Elias at the KEYP Army base in Lamia on December 6.

The ECOWEEK events throughout Greece, which were open and free admission to the general public, were made possible thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of numerous volunteers, professionals and businesses, who enthusiastically led activities, supported and assisted in making the events possible and successful. ECOWEEK events in every corner of Greece were attended by hundreds locally, and made a significant impact in raising environmental awareness in each location.
