ECOWEEK was established by architect, urban planner and social entrepreneur Dr. Elias Messinas on October 1, 2005 with the first ECOWEEK - Environmental Week - on the island of Aegina, Greece. The concept of ECOWEEK was an environmental festival (‘eco’-’week’) that included various activities for people of different interests and ages, to engage in sustainability and environmental thinking and doing. For example, workshops and games for children, lectures, films and exhibitions for adults, site visits, test drive of hybrid vehicles, and lotteries of solar chargers and compost bins. The purpose was to make sustainability accessible so that people would make knowledgeable choices and pick environment solutions and practices over polluting ones. Among the distinguished speakers were architect Kostas Tsipiras, a veteran in sustainable design.
The second ECOWEEK - Environmental Week - in Aegina, Greece took place on June 9, 2006, to celebrate the World Environment Day. With an expanded program and increased publicity, it included screening of the award-winning documentary Aegean Voice and discussion with the director Lydia Karra, beach and sea cleaning, and co-hosted with the local Municipality a presentation of the European Program RECORA on exploring the energy or compost potential of sea-weed in Aegina.
The ECOWEEK events on Aegina, Greece, which were open and free admission to the general public, were made possible thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of numerous volunteers and local professionals and businesses, who enthusiastically led activities, supported and assisted in making the events possible and successful. ECOWEEK events in Aegina were attended by hundreds locally, visiting Athenians and visitors from abroad, and made a significant impact to an island population of 14,000.
